Appliances Industry

When we talk about home appliances, we mainly refer to kitchen and laundry appliances, including Washers, Dryers, Refrigerators, Dishwashers, Ovens/Stoves, Microwaves, etc.

Scratch and dent appliances mean appliances with minor cosmetic damage to the exterior of the item. These imperfections only affect the aesthetics of the products, not their function. Cosmetic damage is one of the reasons appliances are returned.

In most cases, these appliances were never used. While the original factory carton has been removed, these units are protected with corner boards and are wrapped in protective film.

Customers often return a purchase due to remorse, wrong color pick, or size misfit. The bottom line is these items are fully functional and should enjoy a second life.

The condition of customer return/scratch and dent appliances varies. The better the overall condition, the higher the price.

The "Big 5"Appliance Retailers

The most popular home appliance retailers in the United States are the “Big 5”- The Home Depot, Lowe's, BestBuy, Costco and Sears. Together, they have over 70% market share.

In-box Appliances

They sell most brand-new in-box appliances with 1-year manufacturer's warranty. Sometimes, they also provide some open-box items but have very limited availability. Overall, this is the primary appliances market.

What Type of Appliances

For other types of appliances, there are customer returns, scratch and dent, refurbished appliances, used appliances, etc. They are the secondary market, and most of the appliances don’t come with a manufacturer's warranty.

Fully Functional

Scratch and Dent appliances may have been scratched or dented during transportation, but they are fully functional. Each appliance comes with unique dent/scratches, which makes it a piece of art.

Like-New Appliances

Customer returns may come from various markets, with or without traces of use. Mainstream sources include HomeDepot’s 48-hour return, BestBuy’s 15-day return, Lowes’ 30-day return, Costco’s 90-day return, etc. The market price is 45% to 65% of the original price. This merchandise cannot be advertised as “NEW”
